Week in brief 25-31 January 2016
PACE Winter Session: terrorism, migration crisis, democratic institutions in Poland
25-29 January, Strasbourg – Debates on Europe’s migration and refugee crisis, international terrorism and the functioning of democratic institutions in Poland will be among the highlights of the PACE winter session. The President of Bulgaria Rosen Plevneliev and the Captains Regent of San Marino Lorella Stefanelli and Nicola Renzi will give an address. Daniel Mitov, Minister for Foreign Affairs of Bulgaria will also address the Assembly in his capacity as Chairperson of the Committee of Ministers, and the Secretary General of the Council of Europe Thorbjørn Jagland will make his annual statement.
The French Minister of State for European Affairs, Harlem Désir, will participate in the joint debate on terrorism. The Assembly will elect its President for a one-year term, renewable once.
The outgoing PACE President, Anne Brasseur will give a press conference on Monday at 10.30 am.

European Committee of Social Rights’ Conclusions 2015
27 January, Strasbourg (Palais de l’Europe, Room 1, 2.00pm–3.00pm) – The European Committee of Social Rights will make public its Conclusions 2015 on state compliance with the European Social Charter as regards to rights related to children, families and migrants. The publication of the Committee’s conclusions and findings will be marked by a press conference in the presence of the Committee’s President, Giuseppe Palmisano, and its General Rapporteur, Lauri Leppik.
International day of commemoration in memory of the victims of the Holocaust
27 January, Strasbourg – The commemoration of the Day of Remembrance of the Holocaust will take place at 1.00pm on the forecourt of the Council of Europe.
A screening of the documentary “Irene Sendler” by A. Wolf and the testimony of a child saved by her, followed by a discussion, will take place in the projection room of the Palais de l’Europe at 1.30pm.
The Day is dedicated this year to the “Righteous among the Nations”.
Annual press conference of the European Court of Human Rights
28 January, Strasbourg (Human Rights building, press room, 9.30 a.m) – The President of theEuropean Court of Human Rights, Guido Raimondi, will present a summary of the Court’s activities and its statistics for 2015.
Data Protection Day
28 January, Brussels – The Council of Europe is organising a workshop during the 9th Edition of the “Computers, Privacy and Data Protection international conference” (CPDP) to take stock of ten years of experience of the Data Protection Day. The Council of Europe established this celebration in 2006 to raise awareness about the need to protect personal data. 28 January was selected because the Data Protection Convention, “Convention No.108”, which is currently being updated, was opened for signature on that date in 1981. At the conference, Council of Europe delegation will participate in several panels.
